The first thing that struck me were the big malls and billboards, Tokyo style (though obviously of a different caliber). But it seemed farly authentic "Beijing" despite its modernity, unlike the Wangfujing district which just seems like it's trying desperately to be Shanghai and failing miserably. Xidan turned out to be probably my favorite neighborhood in Beijing, at least for shopping.
